Louise Henwood, her son Sam (23) and daughter Annie (21) have suffered more tragedy than any family should ever have to endure. Older brother David died in 2002 after a lengthy battle with leukemia. This past November Louise’s husband Steve passed away after his own struggle with cancer. Sadly Louise herself has recently been diagnosed with cancer and regrettably her prognosis is not good.
Despite their grief and uncertainties about what the future holds in store there is an unmistakable warmth and compassion in this home. Louise possesses a grace and inner strength that is obvious to all who meet her. Their home in Port Coquitlam was originally purchased by Steve’s parents eventually making Sam and Annie third generation owners. It is Annie and Sam’s intention to remain in the home and neighbourhood that is so familiar to them.
Before the Home Team came along much good work had been done to the house, including finishing and painting upstairs as well a new roof - but much remained. While some rooms in the basement (including Annie’s room) have been upgraded, the main living area which Steve and Louise had for years planned to be a family room remained completely unfinished. Because of Louises condition the team felt that helping this family was urgent. To give Louise some peace of mind, we decided to do a mini, four day project, working alongside Sam & Annie - to address some of the main concerns. This happened July of 2011. The basement floor & drywall was finished, a new furnace installed & the windows and gutters, and a retaining wall & fence were replaced, as well as a new garage door.
Louise dearly wished to leave her children with not only a house that is as problem-free as possible but a home that will be a family legacy. Sadly she passed away on August 23rd - a month after the work was completed.
